Glen Lake tennis bounced back from the loss to TC St. Francis Wednesday to beat Div. 3 No. 5-ranked Big Rapids Thursday by a convincing score of 6-2. Glen Lake senior singles player Colebrook Sutherland beat his undefeated opponent Carson Coles, 6-3, 6-2.

Laker sophomore Hawthorn Sutherland, seniors Michael Houtteman and Ben Selby won to sweep the singles flights against Big Rapids.

Glen Lake also won the first doubles match with Ben Romzek and Oliver Mitchell. Laker No. 3 doubles of Porter Martin and Owen Pierce also claimed victory.

Every doubles match against perennial doubles powerhouse Big Rapids went to a tiebreaker, which bodes well for the Lakers, as the No. 3-ranked team in Div. 4 prepares for regionals and state competition in Oct.

Glen Lake also beat Muskegon Reeves Puffer 7-1, lost to Traverse City Central 3-5 during the same match.

Over the weekend, Glen Lake traveled to Dexter to play three Div. 2 teams. The Lakers defeated Dexter 8-0, South Lyon East 6-2, and lost to tennis powerhouse Portage Central 2-6.

“Seven matches in one week was a great test and prep for regionals and states,” Glen Lake assistant coach Bob Sutherland said. “We have this saying in tennis-- winner, winner, chicken dinner. Well, on our way downstate, we went to Frankenmuth and had their famous family style chicken dinner at the Bavarian Inn Friday night. Needless to say, we hit a lot of winners that next day.”
