The vital role of community for seniors

Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think that is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat. –Mother Teresa As we age, the importance of staying connected with others becomes increasingly clear.

Loneliness and isolation affect our health and wellbeing, whether alone or as a caregiver. The good news is that there are many ways to stay engaged and build meaningful connections with others in our community. Whether through a friendly phone call, a shared activity, or simply spending time together, maintaining these bonds must be a priority at the top of our “todo” list.

Staying in touch with others isn’t just about passing the time — it’s a key factor in maintaining our mental, emotional, and physical health. Studies have shown that social interactions reduce the risk of depression, lower blood pressure, and even extend life expectancy. For those who face challenges like mobility issues, the loss of loved ones, or the transition to retirement, these connections are increasingly valuable. Man is by nature a social animal.

Fortunately, there are many ways to connect with others in our community, and the Fall W e l l n e s s Programming offered in partnership with ShareCare of Leelanau and Leelanau County Senior Services provides a great starting point. Here’s a glimpse at what’s available:

• Group Activities: Drummunity with percussionist Lori Fithian at The Barn at French Valley Vineyards

• Social Events: Group tour to New York City in December.

• Educational Workshops: Estate Planning & Medicaid with Ryan Hulst, GT Elder Law.

• Volunteer Opportunities: ShareCare volunteers offer transportation to medical and wellness appointments, make friendly visits, offer reassurance phone calls, and deliver groceries, prescriptions, library materials, and mail.

Even if you can’t attend every event, there are plenty of ways to stay in touch with others.

• Make Regular Phone Calls. A simple phone call can brighten someone’s day. Consider setting up a regular time each week to catch up with a friend or family member.

Use Technology. If you’re comfortable with technology, consider video calls, social media, or messaging apps to stay connected. The libraries in Leelanau County host Tech Tuesday, a great opportunity to learn more.

• Start a monthly lunch bunch, a walking group, or a book club. Food and friends, fresh air, and conversation. All a recipe for feeling better and aging well.

As we move into the fall season, take this opportunity to reach out and connect with others. Whether participating in one of our programs or joining a local group that matches your interests, these connections matter. Prioritize your overall health and well-being. For more information on how to stay connected, stop by our office or give us a call. We’re here to help!
