The Leelanau Historical Society has won the State History Award in the media category for their documentary film “Lake Leelanau, Spirit of the Lake.”

This award, given by the Historical Society of Michigan, recognizes outstanding achievements in the appreciation and understanding of Michigan history.

“We are very honored to be recognized for our hard work on this amazing film,” said Kim Kelderhouse, executive director of the Leelanau Historical Society. “Leelanau is often celebrated for its natural beauty but the history is really what gives this area the sense of place that makes it special.

“‘Lake Leelanau, Spirit of the Lake” is a tribute to the people and stories that deepen our understanding of the past.”

The film, produced by the Leelanau Historical Society and directed by Keith Patterson of Manitou Films, dives into the history and nostalgia of Lake Leelanau.

It will be shown at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bay Community Theatre in Suttons Bay as part of “Water Week.”
