National Parks At Night made its fourth photography workshop appearance at the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (SBDNL) hosted by the Glen Arbor Arts Center last week.
Locals and workshop attendees Michele Aucello, Ania Spitzner, Meg Barber, Lori Lyman, Stacy Ziegenfelder, Alex Newton, Roger Newton, and instructor Gabriel Biderman adventured into the night to capture the best of northwest Michigan.
Biderman, a partner, instructor, and director of collaborations for National Park At Night, finds something different every time he travels to the Leelanau Peninsula.
“You have a very special place. You have a star globe that has wonderful landscapes and historic buildings ... They all play well with the stars,” he said. “It was a challenge this year, but we were able to see the Milky Way in all of its glory.”
Each time Biderman has come back to the area it has been during various moon patterns that help tell the complete story of SBDNL at night.
The class enjoyed the night at Frankfort, Point Betsie, Empire, Glen Arbor, Port Oneida, and more during the week-long workshop.
Biderman’s next challenge is coming to Leelanau during a different season.
Biderman is in his 10th year of running the photography organization.
National Parks At Night has a goal to photograph all of America’s National Parks at night while teaching workshop attendees how to take advantage of the night sky.
“We all love (national parks) but many people don’t stay out after dark at the national parks. Maybe they’re afraid of the dark, maybe they’re afraid of wildlife, but there’s more Rangers doing night programming and star watch parties. We should all feel more comfortable at night,” Biderman said. “We’re super excited for Season 10 where we challenge ourselves to go to more new places.”
Biderman will be heading back home to Brooklyn, New York before traveling to Kanab, Utah from September 26-29 for the Nightscaper - Night Photo Summit.
To celebrate 10 years of National Parks At Night Bilderman and his colleagues will be hosting workshops at Easter Island; Lofoten Islands; Charleston, South Carolina; Iceland (north coast); Big Ben; Badlands; Sleepy Hollow; Lighthouses of Maine; Haleakala National Park; North Cascades; Eastern Sierra & Bristlecone Forest; Lighthouses of Michigan; Monhegan Island; Grand Teton National Park; Sloss Furnaces; Savannah, Georgia; Guadalupe Mountains; Chicago; Bistis Badland & Ship Rock; Morocco; Yosemite National Park Winter; Monument Valley & the Geminids; Easter Island; Orkney Islands; Spain Solar Eclipse; Iceland (Hornstrandir Nature Reserve).
