Gravestone workshop in S-B

The Leelanau Historical Society (LHS) will host a workshop Tuesday, Aug. 27, at two Suttons Bay cemeteries.

The Leelanau Historical Society (LHS) will host a workshop Tuesday, Aug. 27, at two Suttons Bay cemeteries.

The cemeteries, St. Michaels Cemetery and Suttons Bay Township, are at the end of First St., in Suttons Bay.

Both are recognized as they contain numerous early settlers of Leelanau County and their families, representing a historical record and an integral part of the local heritage that must be preserved.

The workshop, scheduled from 3 to 7 p.m. is being held to rehabilitate and preserve the gravestones at the Suttons Bay Township Cemetery and adjacent St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. LHS staff will teach gentle gravestone cleaning methods recommended by the Department of the Interior. Participants are asked to bring gloves, kneeling pad, and pruning shears.

LHS welcomes participants to come for a portion or all the workshop — whatever their schedules allow. The first staff demonstration will start at 3:10 p.m. before participants are let loose to clean the headstones of their choice. The cleaning demonstration will repeat at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m.
