LEELANAU HISTORY

The Leelanau County Road Commission this week heeded the call of constituents who urged them to “litigate, don’t mediate” a dispute over Lake Michigan shoreline access at the end of Reynolds Street in Leland. The Road Commission voted 3-0 Monday evening “to continue with a litigation strategy as recommended by our attorney and discussed during our closed session regarding the Reynolds Street legal proceedings.”

*** Two county government units have yet to take a stand on whether to allow medical-marijuana dispensaries in their communities. And one remains open to both medical — and recreational — marijuana. Northport Village Trustee Will Harper told council members last week he has been approached by multiple private citizens each expressing an interest in opening a recreational- marijuana dispensary in Northport, asking what the next steps would be.

Leelanau County has been busy this summer with activities, and this weekend will be no different with two major events on the docket. The events are somewhat dissimilar, with Empire Anchor Day entering its 37th rendition while the Leelanau Peninsula Wine on the Water Festival is relatively new. Several community groups come together to sponsor Anchor Day, while the Wine and Water Festival has become a major fundraiser for the Leelanau Peninsula Chamber of Commerce. 

*** Bingham Township resident and attorney Clarence K. Gomery, 59, is facing life in prison and the likely suspension of his license to practice law if he is convicted of solicitation to commit murder. Gomery was arrested early Monday after details of his alleged plot to have Traverse City attorney Christopher Cooke killed came to light.

25 YEARS AGO July 22, 1999

The county Board of Commissioners has voted to build a new communication tower in Leland Township for emergency services in conjunction with the Michigan State Police. The tower will be will cost $631,000. 

*** Bingham Township will no longer hold Annual Meetings. Only two other townships in Leelanau County — Suttons Bay and Elmwood — do not hold Annual Meetings. Very few residents have attended recent Bingham meetings, which are no longer a requirement under Michigan law.

50 YEARS AGO July 18, 1974

Leelanau County Planning Commission Thursday night unanimously rejected the final draft of the comprehensive the land use plan for Leelanau County as submitted by Wilbur Smith Associates, professional planning firm hired by Leelanau and Benzie Counties to do the study. It was noted by commissioners that final draft had not included some changes which had been recommended by the Planning Commission. 

*** A brand new 24’8” deep V-Hull sheriff’s patrol cruiser for use by the Leelanau County sheriff ’s marine division is ready to be pressed into service. The new boat, shown here by Sheriff Fred Buehrer has twin 165 horsepower engines. It was purchased with federal revenue sharing funds at a cost of $10,706.50. The tandem wheel trailer, depth sounder and other accessories for the boat were purchased from the sheriff’s marine safety budget.

75 YEARS AGO July 15, 1948

Chief Boatswain’s Mate Byron Dannison, who has commanded the South Manitou Island Coast Guard state for the past four years, will be transferred late in August at his own request. He wants to get to some post where his daughter can go to school and has been promised that he will be sent to such a station.

*** The new minister of the Empire Methodist church will be the Rev. Mikelis Svarc, a Latvian ordained in the Baltic conference of the church. He is expected shortly from Sweden where he has been since his release from Displaced Persons’ camp in Germany.

100 YEARS AGO July 17, 1924

LOST— I lost my kitten last Sunday night. It is a dark kitten with white on neck and underneath. I would be much pleased if some one would return it.— Lorraine Selby. 

*** George Cook is driving a new sport Hupmobile. 

*** The M. E. Ladies will hold their annual sale on Saturday July 26 ai. Schwarz’ hall. A fine line of fancy work of all kinds and home made bake goods will be on sale. A fish pond and parcel post booth will be arranged and home made candy will be sold. Sale begins at 2:30.
