Property owners adjacent to the Reynolds Street road end access in Leland Township have filed a federal lawsuit claiming a “taking” of their property without just compensation.

Attorneys for the Abigail M. Janko Share Trust and the Preston P. Joyes Jr. Trust filed a four-count complaint in U.S. District Court in Grand Rapids last week naming Leland Township and the Leelanau County Road Commission as defendants.

*** After a weekend of fourth festivities, the last thing most folks want to do is hop in a car and hit the highway. But for two Leelanau County families, it was more about the journey than the destination when they set out to swim all five Great Lakes in one day. For Lyn Sumner and her family, the trip has been a long time coming.

Sweatshirts — not T-shirts — are flying off the shelves at Totem Shop in Glen Arbor this summer. “We’re selling sweatshirts and a lot less beach goods,” manager Ken Schwaiger said. “People forget to pack a jacket and need something warm to wear.” Temperatures for the first eight days of July measured at the National Weather Service (NWS) site in Maple City were 6.7 degrees below average. The mercury has made it to 80 degrees on just one occasion this month on Sunday, but barely.

*** Jeff Idema pulled his car off the road the first time he heard “The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald” on his radio. More than 45 years later, the 1978 Suttons Bay graduate and seafaring mariner was able to meet the man who memorialized the fate of the ill-fated ship. The song helped set his life on a seafaring course. Idema met Canadian folk singer and songwriter Gordon Lightfoot in person, backstage during a recent concert at Interlochen Center for the Arts.

*** Strong rain storms have been blamed for stirring up high levels of E. coli at two beaches on Suttons Bay. It was the first time this season that a beach was closed in Leelanau County, although one came close on June 25. The source of the bacteria — animal or human — has not been determined, and probably never will.

County Commissioners eliminated seven of 26 sites being considered for new county facilities in a committee meeting. A second vote will be required.

*** Dave Hansen, owner of Hansen Foods, hopes to have his store built in time to open for Labor Day. The store was destroyed in a suspicious fire June 26.

*** The Enterprise will have a website available beginning on Saturday. It will give readers another source of information.

Thomas Walters, 17, Rt. 2. Cedar, son of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Walters, was admitted to Munson Medical Center last Wednesday evening, July 3 for treatment of eye, facial, chest and stomach injuries caused when a home-made bomb exploded, Leelanau County sheriff’s department reported. The youth, who was taken to Munson Medical Center by Cedar Rescue Vehicle, is reported in good condition, and a spokesman for the hospital said there is no cause to believe the youth’s eye injuries are permanent.

*** A $3,500 Veterans War Memorial to honor Leelanau County Veterans who have died in action, requested by the Veterans of Foreign War will be placed on the Court House lawn at Leland. The memorial request, approved by Leelanau County Board of Commissioners Tuesday upon request of the VFW by VFW Commander Adolph Zimmerman of Lake Leelanau will be of granite and polished stainless steel and field stone, found here in the county.

Leelanau County will be host to Lake Michigan units of the United States Coast Guard on Tuesday afternoon, August 3, when the Coast Guard celebrates the 158th anniversary of its founding. Rescue demonstrations, an air show, boat races, breeches buoy drill and many other exciting events will make up the program at the Leland harbor.

*** The tanker Edgewater caught fire approximately 50 miles south of South Manitou Island at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday and radio messages for help brought Coast Guard units from up and down the Lake Michigan shore. The Coast Guard air station at Traverse City sent planes and two cutters and two picket boats also are reported standing by. At a late hour Wednesday the fire was believed to be out.

During 1923 the American farmer carried over $16,064,000,000 worth of grains and live stock, dairy and poultry products, fruits and vegetables from the farm to the market. The total value of the nation’s farm output was $146,000,000 more than the estimated value for 1922 and over $6,169,000,000 more than the value of the farm products in 1914.

*** A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Pertner on July 2nd when their son Herman and Miss Myrtle Johnson daughter of Dent Johnson were united in marriage. Rev. T.C. Haessler officiated. We extend best wishes to the happy couple.
