A Maine man has applied for a permit to dredge 121 cubic yards in a wetland area just south of the Lake Leelanau Narrows as part of work required to build a boathouse.
Craig OkerStromLang, whose address in a public notice issued by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) is 11 Bridge St. Suite 10, Great Barrington, is proposing to build a 20-foot wide by 28-foot long boathouse. In addition, a 124-foot long by 4-foot elevated boardwalk is proposed.
The property address is 531 South Lake Shore Drive.
“The project proposes to temporarily impact 1,900 square feet of wetlands and permanently impact 1,459 square feet of wetland, and 364 square feet of Lake Leelanau. “No mitigation is proposed,” the notice states.
EGLE may make a determination on the permit request without a public hearing “based on an evaluation of relevant factors, including the public comments received and the effect of the proposed work on the public trust or interest, including navigation, fish, wildlife and pollution,” the notice continues.
The notice was dated June 17. A 20-day period for public comment has expired. Notices were sent to the clerks for Leelanau County and Leland Township, other local government offices, the Lake Leelanau Lake Association, adjoining property owners, and others. The Leelanau Enterprise learned of the notice on Friday from a resident.
