Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear (PHSB), an official partner of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, offers education experiences for the public to learn about Sleeping Bear’s historic side.
Volunteers are ready to greet visitors to the Port Oneida Heritage Center now open for the season from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday.
Bike Tours and Horse and Wagon tours are underway.
Three narrated bike tours include, “Biking a by-gone Era,” and “Peddling Port Oneida’s Past” in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District, and “Secrets of D.H. Day’s Kingdom and Beyond.”
Guides narrate and share stories of the Port Oneida 19th century farming community as bikers ride past pastures and farmsteads and are allowed inside some of the barns and outbuildings.
“Secrets of D.H. Day’s Kingdom and Beyond,” tours the outskirts of Glen Haven with stops of keen interest along the way.
Bike tours run Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 9:30 a.m. plus a Wednesday evening bike tour.
PHSB has partnered with Crystal River Outfitters for a discount on bike rental for guests needing bikes. A Wheels and Water package combines a bike tour and kayak rental.
Horse and wagon tours clipclop through the Port Oneida agricultural community with tours running on Thursdays at 3:30 and 5 p.m., Thursdays, or the entire wagon can be rented by appointment for you family or group. Knowledgeable guides narrate along the ride in a padded carriage pulled by team of Belgian horses. Horse and wagon tours start from the Port Oneida Heritage Center, headquarters of PHSB.
