Leelanau County’s road commissioners have scheduled a tour of county roads on July 16. The tour will give the road commissioners a chance to review recently completed projects and identify sites that may need future work.
The road tour, scheduled by the commission during its June 18 meeting, conflicts with the board’s regular meeting schedule, as they meet at 9 a.m. on Tuesdays between April and mid-November. The road commissioners decided to cancel the July 16 meeting but will still meet July 2.
Also at the June 18 meeting, road commission Engineer Craig Brown reported that work on Gallivan Road near Solon Township is progressing well. As of mid-month, all six culverts due for replacement were installed and pavement had started. The road reopened Tuesday.
Treatment of roads is also going well, as crews had completed the first round of brining for roads and all their crack seal projects by the time of the June 18 regular meeting. Crews also started chip sealing earlier that week, according to staff reports to the board.
The road commission also accepted a 12-foot-wide highway easement on the northwest corner of Cedar and Fourth streets in Leland into the County Road Commission highway system, upon being filed with the county register of deeds.
Road commission Manager Brendan Mullane explained that this easement doubles the effective width for public use of an alley between two parcels belonging to Tom and Gwen Bischoff of Leland. The easement will not encroach on other properties.
The board also directed Mullane to cast a vote for the Michigan County Road Commission Self-Insurance Pool’s board of directors 2024 elections, to include an at-large representative for the northern Michigan region for a three-year term ending in 2027 on behalf of the board.
The candidates include Patricia Loosemore of Eaton County, Charles Moser of Chippewa County, John Rogers of Kalkaska County, and Jake Welch of Barry County. Mullane did not say at the meeting which of these candidates he would vote for.
