Leelanau County’s ship is coming in.

In a presentation at the Discovery Center Collaborative in Elmwood Township Tuesday, Traverse City Cruise Ship Consortium Chair Mike Willis said the Discovery Center Pier is now open for docking cruise ships up to 250 feet in length. Willis said the pier is already expecting at least two cruise lines to take advantage of this by next summer, which he revealed in comments after the meeting to be Hapag-Lloyd Cruises and Ponant, unofficially.

*** You don’t need to tell Jerry Culman, Leelanau County’s long-serving maintenance worker, that the water levels on the Great Lakes are up this year. All he has to do look at how much water is coming up in joints between two cement slabs next to the Leland Dam. “If there is water coming up there, the water levels are up,” he said Tuesday. Culman is the person responsible for maintaining the lake levels on Lake Leelanau for Leelanau County government. Culman, who will mark 40 years of service with the county in December, said how much water flows over the dam depends on different factors.

Glen Arbor has become the first township in the county to require septic inspections for properties changing ownership. And some hope they won’t be the last. The board voted 5-0 Tuesday to adopt a “Point of Sale” (POS) ordinance that will require all systems installed more than five years ago to be inspected by the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department when properties change hands.

*** An overall decline in student enrollment at county schools and across the state is not expected to abate in the near future. The statewide prediction comes from a publication of the Citizens Research Council of Michigan (CRCM). Local superintendents were also interviewed. Only 159 seniors donned caps and gowns this spring from the county’s four school districts.

*** What started last year as a small group of friends going out for a day of fishing on the big lake has grown into an event that brought 45 veterans to the Fishtown docks yesterday for a well-deserved day of rest and relaxation. Though if salmon and lake trout are biting, there could be some work involved. Either way, “It’s going to be a good time,” said Lake Leelanau resident Don Morton, who served in Vietnam as an Army paratrooper.

The number of beaches at Northport Marina has doubled. But the second beach isn’t anything you really want. Methods of coping with the affects of low water at Northport marina park–and dealing with a stagnant pool of water that hampers use of the beach area–are being investigated by the Village Council.

*** The disappointment showed on the face of every Glen Lake softball player after Saturday’s loss in the state championship game but was especially obvious in the eyes of the seniors. These seniors should be anything but disappointed after the careers they’ve had.

A young mugger and robber in Chicago underestimated his victims when he chose Mr. and Mrs. Karl Detzer of Leland as his targets. He got Mrs. Detzer’s purse and money, but not without a struggle. Despite the fact that Karl Detzer is 83 and his wife Clarise is 78 the Leland couple bravely and successfully fought off a mugger who assaulted them in front of an apartment in Chicago Sunday evening. Although both sustained cuts and bruises, and Mrs. Detzer was robbed of a purse containing money and identification.

*** The summer water safety program sponsored by the Leelanau County Chapter. American Red Cross will get underway with registration at seven Leelanau County beaches. Beginning swimmers must be four years old to be enrolled except at Leland where an innovative program especially for three-year-olds will be offered. Also at Leland will be a class for adults. These are tentatively set for Wednesdays.

With school board elections less than thirty days away, few contests have developed in the nominations of directors for the coming year. Voters in Empire will choose two new members of the board at their annual election July 12.

*** Work on the development of South Manitou island into a summer resort playground is under way. Carpenters, remodeling the present main lodge, have taken first steps in the extensive hotel program, according to owner Leo Barrett of Lee Island Association Inc. The biggest resort project in the north, was on the island over the weekend. He returned to Detroit Tuesday.

The Red Line Trail: Not a western story, but a strange thrilling combination of international intrigue and adventures on the sea. The author has a singular degree the dramatic sense and the gift of narration. Although there are some latterday pirates, a supposedly uninhabited island in the Atlantic and a mysterious chart, it is not a tale of buried treasure.

*** Miss Emelia Schaub gets the honor of being the first Leelanau county woman to receive permission to practice law in the courts of the State of Michigan. Miss Schaub graduates Thursday from the Detroit College of Law.
