Leland Public School will be adding an administrator for the 2024-25 school year.
The Board of Education voted unanimously Monday to add an assistant principal position for the upcoming school year. The addition would address several major goals, Superintendent Stephanie Long said.
“One (goal) is to provide a grow your own pathway for aspiring principals and school leaders,” she said. “With the educator shortage, it was really important to us to provide leadership and advancement opportunities for our staff who want to gain experience and develop their skills to be able to stay here as they pursue their career goals.”
The position also helps the district with succession planning. The assistant principal will provide support for the district’s K-12 principal and administrative team who wear many, many hats. “It also provides principals an avenue to develop their leadership skills with experience in managing a team. The principal will oversee the assistant principal and dean of students.
The position is posted for internal candidates only at $90K and includes much of the dayto- day administrative tasks of the an administrator, attendance and truancy oversight, discipline, and some staff evaluations among other duties.
Plans are to have the position filled before the end of the month.
In other business Monday, the board extended Long’s contract one year — now good until June of 2028. Compensation for each of the four remaining years, and once it’s signed, the agreement will be posted on the school district’s website, Long said.
According to the district’s transparency report online, Long’s compensation for the 2024-25 school year will be $137,000.
In other business the board:
• Approved a teacher laptop replacement bid of $95,712 from Apple Inc. The cost of this will be paid from the school’s technology/ bus bond.
• Approved the L-4029 form which includes the millage rates for operations, construction debt, tech/bus and sinking fund millages to be levied July 1.
• Approved the 2024-2025 board meeting schedule unchanged from the previous year. The board’s monthly meetings are set for 6 p.m., the third Monday of each month.
• Adopted a resolution to continue membership in the Michigan High School Athletic Association for 2024-25.
