Leland captures NWC for first time

Leland girl’s soccer captured a Northwest Conference Championship for the first time in program history as the Comets finished with an undefeated 10-0 record. The flying Leland team is ready to make a run in districts as the Comets prepare for tough tournament competition.

Leland girl’s soccer captured a Northwest Conference Championship for the first time in program history as the Comets finished with an undefeated 10-0 record. The flying Leland team is ready to make a run in districts as the Comets prepare for tough tournament competition.

Leland seniors Cameron Flees, Mallory Lowe, and Olive Ryder were honored on senior night during a 10-0 win over Benzie on Wednesday. The Comets turned around and defeated Glen Lake 8-0.

“We all have the same goal ... It’s just gonna take a lot of hard work and togetherness,” Ryder said. “It’s nice to have (a championship) for ourselves and to prove to everyone how hard we’ve been working and it was all worth it.”

Leland goal scorers against Benzie included Lilly Connor (2), Addi Waskiewicz, Hadley Bison, Cameron Flees, Bri VanSteenhouse, Mallory Lowe, Willa Murray (2), Elli Miller. Assists were dished by Murray, and Maya Warner (2).

“We’ve all been working hard since freshman year and almost before that. We are all excited and we love this team. Getting to work with these girls and being leaders as captains and seniors has been fun for all of us,” Lowe said.

Leland turned around and defeated Glen Lake on Thursday 8-0. Six different players scored including Waskiewicz (2), Connor (2), Lowe, Emerie Burda, Flees, and Hamelin. Assists came from Connor (2), Bison, and Ariah Amin.

Glen Lake bounced back and defeated Benzie 4-0 on Monday in the last game of the regular season.

Laker senior Ava Raymond and Maggie Diotte provided the offensive production. Raymond led with a hat-trick. Laker goalkeeper Andi Forton had a shutout. The Lakers finished third in the conference, behind Leland and Suttons Bay, playing most games with nine players.

“Hats off to them for such a strong showing,” Glen Lake coach Eric Luthardt said.

Glen Lake welcomes Harbor Springs for the first round of district at 4 p.m. today.

Suttons Bay celebrated senior night against Buckley Wednesday. Suttons Bay honored Keeley TwoCrow, Lauren Lint, Elena Grant, Sarah Bunek, and Amanda Tarsa.

The girl’s soccer team is a co-op between Suttons Bay and Lake Leelanau St. Mary.

The Norse and Bears battled to a 0-0 tie in the last home game of the season.

Suttons Baby will travel to Charlevoix for the first round of districts today at 5 p.m.

The second round of districts will take place Tuesday at Elk Rapids High School. Leland will face the winner of Glen Lake and Harbor Springs.
