Discovery Pier just celebrated the completion of its first phrase of improvements including new perimeter pathways, paved parking, fishing area railing, shade structure, and event pavilion.
Discovery Center & Pier will host its second annual Discover Fishing at the Pier program Friday, June 1.
This free program, developed in partnership with Inland Seas Education Association, Michigan United Conservation Clubs, and the Northwest Michigan Fishing Club, will welcome up to 90 youth and their families to Discovery Pier and will provide an introduction to Great Lakes fishing, food webs, and stewardship.
“This program is offered free of charge because it is important to us that all youth can participate,” Discovery Center & Pier Development coordinator Amanda Gower said. “Financial barriers can often prevent people from enjoying fishing or other recreational activities on our Great Lakes, this program is one small step towards creating better fishing access for all.”
During the program, youth will rotate through hands-on learning stations including casting, knot tying, macroinvertebrate study, and fish identification. After these learning stations, youth participants will continue to practice their new skills with the support of staff and volunteers in Discovery Pier’s new and improved fishing area, Each youth participant will not only leave with newfound skills, they will also receive a new rod, reel, and tacklebox to take home.
The program was and is made possible with support from the Great Lakes Fishery Trust.
