Leland Twp. fireworks a ‘go’

The show will go on in Leland over the Fourth of July holiday.

Mark Morton, president of the Leland Chamber of Commerce, attended the Leland Township Board meeting Monday to share good news.

“We had enough for the down payment and have enough in the bank to cover it,” Morton said.

Earlier this year, the Chamber canceled its biggest fundraiser — the Leland Food and Wine Festival — citing a lack of available space to host the event.

As a result, the chamber lost revenue putting the annual fireworks display in jeopardy.

Enter Mary Kuntz and Cheryl VanZee, who spearheaded fundraising activities raising enough cash for the holiday tradition.

Morton reported his organization is going with a new vendor, which has already visited the county to inspect the setting for the celebration — Hancock Park.

Board members had expected to act on the vendor’s contract. However, the document was not available at the time.

Members agreed that a special meeting may be needed to act on the contract prior to its June 10 meeting.

In related business, Monday, the board voted to request its annual permit to close M-22 for the Leland July 4 parade.

In other business the board:

• Approved a request from the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department to take samples from Van’s Beach weekly as part of its annual water monitor this summer.

• Approved a contract with Tobin & Co. to perform an audit for the fiscal year ending March 31 at a not-to-exceed cost of $10,050.

• Gave its seal of approval to the Leland Yacht Club to use Bartholemew Park, Aug. 2 to 4 for its annual Barbecruise.

• Appointed Carolyn Telgard to the sewer commission for a 3-year term ending July 2027.
