A backyard composting workshop is planned Wednesday, May 29 at the county Poor Farm Barn Gardens.

The Leelanau County Solid Waste Council will host the hands-on composting education program aimed at diverting organic material from kitchens and backyards and building rich compost for many home planting projects.

The Poor Farm is located across from Myles Kimmerly Park on Co. Rd. 616, west of Maple City.

Kate Thornhill, founder and caretakers of Leelanau Creek Preserve in Suttons Bay will lead the workshop.

She will cover the four rules of composting, the materials required for composting, the proper carbon nitrogen ratios or “greens and browns” required for effective microbial decomposition and how to maintain the compost system for optimum success. Volunteers from Row by Row Garden Project at the Poor Farm Barn will follow-up with tips on incorporating compost into both flower and vegetable gardens.

The program begins at 9 a.m. and will continue through noon with an 11 a.m. tour of Krull’s Composting, one-quarter mile down the road. Barry Krull will talk about how he produces premium humus compost for backyard and commercial uses.

The workshop is being offered at no charge to county residents.

Those planning to attend are encouraged to bring a folding chair, hat, rain gear and a water bottle.

The event will happen rain or shine.
