Leelanau and Louisville resident Allen Northcutt saw his 75th Kentucky Derby on Saturday from Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.

“They’re all a little different but they’re all pretty much the same,” he said. “Lots and lots of people and good people watching and fun to bet on the horses. You never know who’s gonna win.”

This year’s Kentucky Derby was a little different for Northcutt as he was nursing a shoulder industry. Despite the struggle, friends brought drinks and made sure bets were placed.

“What a great race we had. Three horses that you can throw a blanket over them right at the finish,” Northcutt said.

Mystik Dan won the race by less than a nose over Sierra Leone in second and Forever Young in third place.

Northcutt came out on top in his horse betting after wagering $800 to come away with a tidy $1300 at the end of the day.

“I bet five to win, five to place,” he said. “Then my wife bought the wrong ticket and I wanted $100 to win in place on the No. 2 horse and she bought $100 to place on the No. 3 horse and that’s the horse that won the race ... But I did come home with more than I went with.”

Northcutt will be heading to France before going back to Kentucky then to Leelanau for another peninsula summer in Leland.
