Northport Village Council trustees unanimously approved an extension of a management agreement with Northport Creek Golf Course (NGC) at its regular meeting on April 11. Village President Chris McCann recused himself from the vote and discussion as he is an employee of the golf course.
The agreement ensures an extended 10-year term agreement (until 2034) for the villageowned golf course, and it also modifies the provision that otherwise prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages.
“The basic idea is that it’s been successful for 10 years and we want to give them another 10 years, not two five year renewable terms, but one 10 year term, because that gives them the opportunity to plan and develop alternative revenue sources and that’s really the purpose of the liquor license…” Village Manager Jim Dyer said at the April 8 meeting. “The original contract said they (the golf course) could not have alcohol… What we are saying is we are rescinding that provision with the contract, giving them the opportunity to pursue that if they choose.”
Dyer explained if the golf course does choose to sell alcoholic beverages in the future, it could use the income from that revenue for capital improvements and maintenance of other things, noting that it has been in operation since 2014 when it was first completed.
“That will not impact the revenue that the village gets… we hope if we have those opportunities for those other income streams, that will also enhance the amount of golf that’s played there as well, increasing revenue we get,” he said, adding that the village receives a percentage from the gross revenue of the golf operations. “It gives them the opportunity to find revenue streams they don’t have right now to do capital improvements they haven’t really been able to do.”
According to the management agreement, the village and golf course agree “that the energy generation capacity of the existing solar panels has deteriorated, and that “it is the intent of NGC, at its own expense, to refurbish, repair or rehabilitate the solar panels such that they are again capable of generating power at full capacity.” Updating the solar panels is one of the golf course projects that would receive future maintenance.
