A $1 million proposal to build sidewalks along both sides of M-22 in Greilickville so signalized pedestrian crosswalks can be installed along Leelanau County’s busiest thoroughfare may be coming to Elmwood Township soon. Elmwood Township Supervisor Jeff Shaw says he’s been very busy this winter. Shaw is the private owner of a substantial amount of property along the M-22 commercial corridor in the southeast corner of Leelanau County, including his own chiropractic clinic directly across from the township marina.
*** Petitions to recall Kasson Township Clerk Traci Cruz have been prepared and will be the subject of a hearing by the Leelanau County Election Commission on Tuesday. The purpose of the hearing is to determine whether reasons stated for the recall are both clearly stated and factual. Recall petitions filed last week at the county Government Center say that Cruz should be recalled from office because she has failed to attend regular meetings of the Kasson Township Board for six months.

Two local school districts are each looking for a person with the right combination of brains, talent and experience to fill their top spot. School leaders also know that it will take the right amount of money to get them. But should superintendents’ salaries be based more on the number of students they oversee — as most districts are funded? Or should they be paid at the same rate as CEOs of private companies?
*** The developer for a 63-acre golf course under construction in Northport said yesterday that he wants to donate the nine-hole course, clubhouse, maintenance building and all the equipment purchased to the village. The transfer of property will allow the owner of the course to avoid paying property taxes to local governments, although the plan calls for Northport Village to be reimbursed. The golf course, which has been under construction since last summer, is expected to open around the Fourth of July.

A local business called “Rung and Bung” Works burned to the ground in Suttons Bay. Arson is being investigation as a possible cause of the fire.
*** State Police troopers arrested Cynthia L. McDonnell and charged her with first-degree murder of shooting of her husband, Daniel J. McDonnell, in their home in Bingham Township. Daniel McDonnell had been subpoenaed for an out-of-state court appearance to answer questions about an apparent shortage in the trust fund of his developmentally disabled sister.
*** The county board has voted to have the present county emergency services tower off Schomberg Road torn down in favor of a stronger tower that can handle county and state equipment. The county plans to spend $360,000 for the joint tower.

The entry deadline for the 1974 Miss Leelanau Scholarship Pageant to be held May 5 at Sugar Loaf Village has passed and the four candidates announced in the April 11 Enterprise are the ones who will compete for the title, it was announced by Barbara Houghton of Empire, Pageant Director. The four candidates are Colleen Montgomery, 18, of Maple City, Pamela Dawn Neeley, 18, of Glen Arbor Deborah Novak, 18, Cedar and Sherry Stachnik, of Maple City.
*** Gene A. (Toni) Perfect, Leelanau County’s new planning department director has arrived and has set up his offices for the present in the trailer across the street from the Courthouse on the county parking lot. Perfect was formerly associated with Wilbur Smith and Associates, planning consultant firm which was hired by Leelanau and Benzie counties to make a joint study of priority area needs in view of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore developments.
75 YEARS AGO April 22, 1948
Fire swept the interior of the Mueewenberg saloon in Cedar Tuesday night, causing damage of several thousand dollars. Volunteers with buckets, fire extinguishers and garden hoses fought the blaze until the arrival of a truck from the Traverse City fire department which made a fast run to the scene. The fire started under the front end of the bar and quickly spread through out the interior.
*** The House Appropriations Committee Monday reported out the bill to give Leelanau County one of the finest harbors on the Great Lakes, according to word from Washington. The harbor, to cost in the vicinity of $350,000, will be enclosed by a breakwater.
100 YEARS AGO April 24, 1924
A fine addition to the Beauty Spots of Leland and to the hotel advantages of this region is the new “Riverside Inn” built last summer to replace the one that burned the year before. This new structure is prettily situated between the bank of the river and River Street.
*** The play “Welcome Home Jimmy” will be given in the Co-op Hall at Suttons Bay, Friday evening, April 30. It is a three-act play, lasting about two and a one half hours. The cast included nine members of the senior class.
