Blight grant to fund parking lot work

The Elmwood Township Board held a special meeting just two weeks before their regularly scheduled April meeting last week, so this session was understandably short, with the board just approving construction work and setting dates for additional meetings.

The board approved spending $7,640 to replace 442 square yards of pavement at the Brewery Creek parking lot, with the cost of removal to be covered by a blight elimination grant. The already beaten down pavement was further damaged during construction work on the parking lot late last year, and this project is meant to restore the pavement in the parking area.

In March, the township board authorized distributing requests for proposals for updating its fiveyear comprehensive plan. At the April 8 meeting, the board appointed township Clerk Connie Preston as township board representative to a selection committee to award the contract to one of the bidders, with Trustee Dave Darga to serve as an alternate.

The township board will reconvene for another special meeting April 18 to review personnel committee recommendations for appointing a new harbormaster. The previous harbormaster, Pete Moon, stepped down in early March to pursue work in the private sector.

While the previous deputy harbormaster, Clem Thompson, has been filling in as interim harbormaster, he doesn’t want to serve as a permanent replacement for Moon, according to township Supervisor Jeff Shaw.

The township advertised for the harbormaster position in early March, and they received applications from two very qualified candidates, Preston said. She said they are thinking about offering a new full-time buildings and grounds position to one candidate, and a seasonal harbormaster position to the other.

The township board also agreed to schedule a public hearing on routine adjustments to their road maintenance districts, to be held at their May 13 monthly meeting.

Elmwood Township’s special meeting in late March was far more eventful, as the board approved an almost $80,000 contract with civil engineering company Wade Trim, to survey and design a multiuse trail going from the township offices to the M-22 intersection.

Also at the March 27 special meeting, the board approved a quote from Dockwa for marina management software that would cost the township $8,000 per year. The reason for this purchase was to make it easier to manage slip contracts and allow users to upload their information to pay for their stubs online. Previously, this work was done by pen and paper.
