The main meal has been ordered for Kids Fishing Day.

The Leelanau County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday allocated $8,566 for 2,000 adult bluegills, which will be planted leading up to the community event set for Sunday, June 30.

Businesses and private organizations contribute approximately the same amount, providing plenty of activity for the 600 or so folks that normally attend Kids Fishing Day. The event, held at fishing ponds in Veronica Valley County Park, includes free hot dogs and pop, fly fishing and fish cleaning demonstrations, and an amphibian display with locally caught — and released — bullfrogs, turtles and snakes.

Young artisans will have an opportunity to create their own fish painting.

Fishing equipment is available to borrow, and bait is provided. There is no charge for anything — just an invitation to enjoy something unique to Leelanau.

“It truly is a day for the family,” said Alan Campbell, chair of the Kids Fishing Day Committee. “It’s the biggest one-day kids fishing day in the state, and for good reason. Community involvement makes all the difference. Leelanau businesses, governments and organizations deserve all the credit, along with the many volunteers who sign up to help.”

Volunteers and donations are always needed, Campbell added. He may be reached at (231) 4924972.

Organizations participating in the past include the county Parks and Recreation Commission, Lake Leelanau Lake Association, Grand Traverse Band, Michigan DNR, Cherryland Electric, Cedar Rod and Gun Club, PATH and Leelanau Conservation District.

The bluegills provide a season- long shoreline fishing opportunity for youngsters. Only young people may fish the front ponds at Veronica Valley.
