To the editor:
It appears some have lost the value of truth and why we are land of laws.
Laws are for the purpose of protecting us from ourselves within a society. You never know when you may need the rule of law to protect your best interest. Truth is based on fact and not “alternative facts,” which don’t exist. Get real!
Congressman, Jim Jordan argues that social media should not be supervised. That the public can decide for themselves what is truth. He expressed the misinformation, disinformation, the Big Lie, or any lie, is up to the individual to choose. Meanwhile, harmful lies and conspiracy theories continue to spawn from undocumented social media.
Robert Giles’ book, “When Truth Mattered,” told the blow by blow story of the Kent State shootings. Bob then, was head of the news desk at the Beacon Journal, Akron, Ohio.
Even though there was no electronic social media in 1970, conspiracy theories rumored that it was students who fired the first shots. Respectful and determined, hard fought journalism discovered the truth. It was in fact not the students. Truth mattered.
When Rush Limbaugh was asked how he felt about broadcasting his untruths and misleading rants to his listeners, he responded, first you have to realize I am a businessman. Meaning, there is money to be made telling his listeners something different than other media.
I propose a Bar of Soup in the Mouth legislation for all liars. Change for the good would be inevitable.
