Copper beneath state park eyed

To the editor: Last week I learned that the state of MI is considering approval for a Canadian Company to mine copper adjacent to the Porcupine Mountains State Park in Gogebic County and in extreme proximity to Lake Superior. To the editor:

Last week I learned that the state of MI is considering approval for a Canadian Company to mine copper adjacent to the Porcupine Mountains State Park in Gogebic County and in extreme proximity to Lake Superior. The state is also considering a $50 million grant to Highland Copper to proceed.

What we know:

• The park does not own mineral rights to its property so mining can be conducted under the park land and Lake Superior

• Extraction of 30 pounds of copper generates 1,970 pounds of tailings (waste)

• Mining corporations, like oil companies, do not effectively clean up or restore habitat

• There are no guaranteed long term economic benefits to the local economy

Unfortunately, public comment was scheduled for March 26th. But there’s still time to let the governor and your elected representatives know what you think. We are all responsible for our environment.
