To the editor:

Chuck Grassley and Sen. Jon Tester, want to study the effectiveness of biochar, a carbonrich material.

The bipartisan Biochar Research Network Act would establish a national network to test the impact of biochar across various soil types, application methods and climates.

This legislation could help farmers who are knee deep in loamy sand. One goal is to use biochar productively to contribute to climate mitigation, reproduction, residence to extreme weather events, natural resources conservation and farm profitability.

“Farmers rely on science for crop productivity and soil health.” Grassley said. “Biochar presents a ow-cost way to improve soil quality while sequestering carbon.”

Tester said, “As a third generation farmer, I know how important it is that we invest in research and innovation so that producers have the information and the tools they need to continue feeding the world.”

Sen. Sherrod Brown said “As I work on the next Farm Bill, I’ll be pressing for common sense solutions like biochar.”
