Visitors to Empire Beach may soon have to shell out some shekels — 10, to be exact — if they want to park in one of just 87 prime spots located within the park. The Empire Village Council is looking at ways to recoup about $65,000 per year in maintenance costs at the Lake Michigan beach, and most council members think a parking pass may be just the solution. If the village goes ahead with the idea, a machine that will allow people to purchase a full day of parking will be located at the beach.

South Manitou Island Coast Guard station, which has been operating on a “stand-by” status since the end of the war, on May 15 will be re-activated and will probably have a crew of eight surfmen. According to rumors up and down the coast a picket boat or small cutter probably will make island harbor its home port this summer *** Although the 1948 season on the Great Lakes opened at Cleveland last week, when the Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw drove a channel through the ice and led the procession of ore carriers northward toward the Sault Ste.
