A self-appointed citizens committee may be near to finalizing a proposal they hope the Leelanau County Road Commission will adopt that would ease standards for commercial driveways along county rights-of-way.

Representatives of a “Curb and Gutter Policy Review Committee” (C3A) appeared at this week’s road commission meeting with a 12-page document outlining their concerns and options they’d like commissioners to consider.

*** The remains of an 1850s schooner are benefiting a Leland couple whose 5-week old daughter was conceived less than eight months ago. That’s a lot of ages. But they point to one result: A community that cares for its youngest members. Wood from that schooner has been transformed into a clock with a priceless history in maritime lore that’s being auctioned to benefit the Maggie and Nathaniel Gooden family of Leland.

The owner of Sugar Loaf Resort has been given until next week to submit a detailed plan outlining how he or she will bring all structures on the property into compliance with the state Construction Code — or face demolition. Meanwhile, Leelanau County recently received $136,340 from a downstate bank, paying off overdue taxes on the resort.

*** Alene Strole did not move to Leelanau County to get closer to North Fox Island, which may have been where her sister died. But she wonders at the forces that brought her here — and the forces that have kept authorities from finding the Oakland County child murderer through the more than 37 years that have lapsed since her sister’s death.

25 YEARS AGO March 11, 1999

New restrictions on the consumption of whitefish caught in Lake Michigan north of Frankfort have come as a surprise to local commercial fishermen. Higher dioxin levels detected in whitefish caught in Lake Michigan have compelled the Michigan Department of Community Health to recommend some “very significant” changes in the amounts of whitefish people should eat.

*** Leelanau Township has made an offer on two lots for a new location for the fire hall. The two parcels constitute 2.13 acres and are located on the corner of Mill and 8th streets. Supervisor Richard Hufford signed an offer sheet of $55,000 for the lots. No decision has been made on whether to purchase the property.

50 YEARS AGO March 7, 1974

A picket line has been set up at the Standard Oil Co. of Indiana property in Greilickville on M-22 by the United Oil Workers of America which represents the Standard Oil distributors in Michigan The picket line is part of a state wide strike which started Friday, March 2, by the distributors and a spokesman for the union told the Leelanau Enterprise editor that “We have been without a contract since August.” The spokesman said. “We are seeking a higher commission base.”

*** Leland Township is now the proud owner of a new $13,000 rescue vehicle which was paid for from federal revenue sharing funds and which will be completely equipped and licensed as an ambulance to serve Leland Township.

75 YEARS AGO March 4, 1948

Three men whose 36-foot fishtug had been locked in a grinding ice field less than 300 yards off Leland Harbor for 19 hours were rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinac while all Leland lines the beach to watch. The tug, LaBlance, with Captain George LaBlance, Sr., Leroy Sendenburgh and Mitchell Wabegeness, all of Charlevoix, aboard, had been ice locked since the previous afternoon when the powerful ice breaker drove a channel through the floe, passed a line to the boat and pulled it free.

*** Judge Charles A. Brown in Circuit Court ruled Friday against an effort by the parents of Donald S. Dunklow to recover custody of the child, now a temporary ward of the Probate Court. Sitting in Leelanau County for the first time since his election, Judge Brown heard arguments for and against a writ of habeas corpus, challenging the jurisdiction of the Probate Court to retain the boy in its control.

100 YEARS AGO March 6, 1924

Now is the best time to plan the summer vacation; then when summer comes and you can’t take it, you will have had all these months of fun planning for it, anyway.

*** Mrs. Maro will open the Blue Lantern Tea Room at the Hemlocks Cottage, Shorewood, in Leland about June 25th.

*** Mr. Frank Sheridan of Glen Arbor, was in town last Friday on business. We acknowledge a pleasant call.
